Reality Therapy
Reality Therapy, also known as Control Theory maintains that human behavior is purposeful and originates completely from within the individual and not external forces. Humans are influenced, not controlled, by environmental forces. Internally motivated behavior is geared toward satisfying basic human needs. These four psychological needs are identified as:
- belonging
- power
- freedom and fun
- the physiological need for survival
Control theory states that the brain functions as a control system to provide the necessary tools for satisfying these needs. When chosen behaviors fail to provide the desired outcome, internal psychological needs are thwarted, and the chosen behaviors become painful and lack satisfaction. When chosen behaviors provide the desired outcome, the individual's needs are met in a responsible way, and an identities of success and self - esteem are created.
