Preventing Addiction Triggers from Leading to Relapse

You will learn more about how to prevent addiction triggers from leading to a relapse back into drug abuse and active alcoholism when you attend the residential treatment center at Spirit Lodge and participate in the Living in Balance portion of your addiction treatment program.

By this point, we will have been discussing what addiction triggers are, how to identify your personal addiction triggers, avoid addiction triggers and interrupt those triggers that cannot be avoided because of old habits, routines and the specific nature of the different triggers that you may experience dependent upon your individual experiences.

Exposure to many addiction triggers will cause cravings for drugs and alcohol.  People do not always realize it when they are exposing themselves to an addiction trigger and for this reason, the triggers and cravings can take hold quickly and unsuspectingly.

It is much more difficult to stop the process of relapse when you wait until you are experiencing a strong craving to use drugs than if you were to stop the process before it reached that point.

Defusing an Addiction Trigger

You will learn about ways to defuse an addiction trigger and how to avoid exposure to as many of your personal triggers in order to prevent yourself from falling into relapse.  As discussed previously, identifying what your triggers are is an important aspect of this process, however there may also be times when you only later become aware that you are being exposed to an addiction trigger.  After reaching this realization, you will have an opportunity at this very moment to leave that situation or stay and become increasingly affected by the addiction trigger.

Helpful behaviors for handling these many situations will be explained to you in your addiction treatment at Spirit Lodge.  Changing your normal routine structure is one of the ways that you can reduce the power of an addiction trigger’s hold on you.

Once you have acknowledged events that may lead to experiencing a craving for drug use or drinking alcohol, you can then plan out activities to assist in preventing these addiction triggers from leading to relapse.  Getting others involved in this process can also help you succeed.

At Spirit Lodge we know you are more than just an addiction.  That’s why our supportive, experienced counselors, who regularly help guests from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York and Florida, will work closely with you to assist you in ending your drug dependence or alcohol dependence.
