Internal Addiction Triggers

Holistic treatment for addiction is provided at Spirit Lodge for meeting the unique needs of individuals suffering from the disease of addiction.  During the Living in Balance portion of these addiction treatment programs, you will learn more about the different types of addiction triggers that, without the proper education and support, can lead to a relapse into active substance abuse.

Encouraging counselors will help you to understand that addiction triggers are connections that you have made from experiences that created associations in your mind and behaviors with events, emotions, other people, locations that you frequented and various items.

You will be learning about the ways that the different types of triggers work together in a sort of partnership to create a craving for alcohol or drugs.

Types of Addiction Triggers Affecting Drug Addicts and Alcoholics

The first types of triggers that you will be discussing are internal addiction triggers.  These tie to emotions or feelings you may have had before you would previously have thought about or chose to use your drug of choice. Some people have called alcohol social lubricant or liquid courage because they drank in order to overcome feelings of insecurity.

Some individuals who became addicted to drugs or alcohol would experience emotions such as depression, boredom, loneliness, or anger and would commonly use drugs or drink alcohol directly following the initiation of these feelings. Even feelings of happiness, elation or excitement may precede the use of drugs or alcohol for many.

An internal trigger can be any sort of emotion that leads to drinking alcohol or using drugs.

Spirit Lodge professionals understand that you are a unique individual, much more than just an addiction.  That’s why our supportive, experienced counselors, who regularly help guests from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, California, New York and Florida, will work closely with you to assist you in ending your drug dependence or alcohol dependence.
