Addiction Treatment Program: The Serenity and St. Francis Prayers
Assistance in learning how to pray will be provided during the session with the spirituality topic focus of your holistic addiction treatment program at Spirit Lodge. This Living in Balance session will explain the benefits of spirituality and the ways that the 12 step group addiction recovery programs are choices for some, while others choose non-spiritual self-help groups in order to continue their long-term sobriety assistance.

For those who want to learn prayers that are helpful and are encouraged in the twelve step programs, we have provided both of the main prayers that are offered for those who are interested in using them as a part of their addiction recovery.The first commonly used prayer for helping those who suffer from the disease of addiction to connect more closely to the higher power of their choosing is the Serenity Prayer.
The Serenity Prayer states:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
The second prayer we will list here that is commonly used in the 12 step program is the prayer of St. Francis. The Prayer of St. Francis states:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
You have now reached the information provided regarding the last topic addressed in the Living in Balance session regarding spirituality and as you see the prayers listed above, previous portions of this session will also have discussed encouragement provided by the 11th step of the 12 step programs regarding prayer, in addition to the H.O.W. acronym, which stands for honesty, open-mindedness and willingness, as well as many other aspects of spirituality in addiction recovery.
