Addiction Recovery: The Higher Power Concept
At Spirit Lodge, you will have the opportunity to participate in the Living in Balance portion of the holistic addiction treatment provided to assist you in achieving positive change and overcoming a substance abuse addiction.
At this stage in your treatment program, you will have reached the session in the series of educational sessions that focuses on the topic of spirituality. The higher power concept will now be discussed and you will learn ways that your addiction to substances previously was your ruling higher power.
Receiving assistance from an outside source becomes critical when you have reached this stage of your disease of addiction. For those who choose to attend continuous 12 step meetings and get involved in these programs, you will learn that this external source of help as a part of this type of recovery program will need to be a higher power of your choosing. This is a very personal choice and aspect of your continuous addiction treatment plan
Twelve Step Programs & Higher Power Definitions
You will learn that while some individual drug addicts and alcoholics feel that the actual 12 step group is their higher power, others use a particular program of addiction treatment that differs from the 12 step groups, while others may even think of the community that they live in as being the higher power that they must seek help from and rely on for guidance in addiction recovery.
During your Spirit Lodge holistic addiction treatment program, there will be a discussion regarding the different ways that people actually mean the term “ God” when they suggest that their higher power is their God.
People that are a part of a specific religious faith or those who were raised in a definitively religious family will generally perceive God to be God they were taught about in their religion. However, other perceptions of God as a higher power are often restricted to the concept of what love is or what the purpose or meaning of their life actually is.
As you learn more about the different paths to spirituality that people may take in addiction recovery and learn more about the 12 step groups, verses non-spiritual self-help groups, you will discover that in these twelve step programs, individuals are encouraged to create their own higher power definition to rely on as long as it is a power that is greater than they themselves are so that they may use this higher power to draw strength from as they attempt to better their lives with long-term sobriety.
Professionals at Spirit Lodge treat you as a unique individual and much more than just an addiction.
