Existential Therapy
A major focus of the existential approach is that one's existence is not fixed once and for all. Individuals are constantly recreating, becoming, and evolving. Being a human being implies discovering and trying to make sense of one's existence. Using the Existential model helps Spirit Lodge guests understand their human experiences. The basic assumptions of the human conditions, according to the existential approach, include:
- the capacity for self awareness
- freedom and responsibility
- creating one's identity and establishing meaningful relationships with others
- the search for meaning, purpose, values, and goals
- anxiety as a condition for living.
This concept teaches anxiety as an internal radar signal, signaling this is when we are ready and capable of making changes in life.
