SPIRITUAL CARE
“The word spirituality comes from the Latin ‘to breathe’,” says the Reverend Janice Spence, spiritual advisor for the clients of Spirit Lodge. She explains that without a strong belief in something greater than oneself we deny the spirit – causing us to suffocate. Spence, who has a 15-year history helping others as a substance abuse counselor, has always had a dream to combine the mental and physical healing with the spiritual. The nondenominational program focuses, not on the finding of a god, but on the belief that faith – faith in anything – is an essential step on the road to recovery. “People have a lot of baggage when it comes to faith and spirituality,” Rev. Spence says. “I help them unpack that baggage and allow them to make sense of it.” Support and renewing of one’s spirituality is an essential part of recovery.
